New flu strain linked to Huntingdon County Fair

By WJAC Web Staff

HUNTINGDON, Pa. —

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed at least four cases of human flu due to a new strain known as H3N2v.

In a press release on Friday, the department said the cases happened at the Huntingdon County Fair sometime between August 5th and the 11th.

It says the strain is typically associated with swine, though the Health and Agriculture departments said handling or eating pork products has no risk of exposure to influenza.  It says there is no evidence of the new flu strain spreading person-to-person.

The release said there are no reported hospitalizations and there may be up to six more probable cases from the fair.

"People should use common sense and take steps to protect their health if they're visiting or exhibiting in a county fair in the coming weeks, especially if they are at high risk for illness," said Secretary of Health Dr. Eli N. Avila in the release.

The department says symptoms of the H3N2v flu are similar to that of seasonal influenza, and would include fever, coughing, fatigue, and lack of appetite. Other influenza symptoms may include a runny nose, sore throat, muscle aches, eye irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The department wants anyone who gets sick after being around livestock, especially pigs, is asked to call their doctor, local health department or the state Health Department at 1-877-PA-HEALTH.
