Cambria County —
The new mascot for the Johnstown Chiefs is an Indian Chief. It is a mascot that could be considered, to some, politically incorrect and insensitive.
The Chiefs' season started Saturday and that is when the new mascot was introduced. The team's majority owner, Jim Weber, says they changed mascots for the team because the Iron Dog was getting tired and old. So far, they say, they've gotten no negative comments about the new mascot. Weber thinks if Florida State and a Michigan team could keep theirs they should have no problem.
Weber says, "I don't think it is offensive in any way. I'm of Irish and German descent. If we were to call ourselves the fighting Irish, like what Notre Dame does, I'm not protesting that Notre Dame has a fighting Irishman."
Channel 6 News talked to a few people in Johnstown who wouldn't go on camera but say they won't be surprised if this becomes a problem for the Johnstown Chiefs.
