New Medicare Options

Several senior citizens say they are very concerned with the rising cost of prescription drugs, but when it comes to a Medicare program, what matters to them is the bottom line.

"I was, at one time, on thirteen medications for different ailments and things got so far out of hand that in order to keep up financially, I just cut out the medication," says Ila Rehn, of Johnstown.

When it comes to health versus financial survival, many of the people agreed with her. New Medicare Plan-D is designed to ease some of the financial burden, by offering 23 different assistance options to seniors.

"Thirty-two dollars is the nation average, but there's going to be many many plans below that. In fact, in Pennsylvania, the lowest plan is like $10.99 or $11," says Jessica Dipaolo with Medicare Rx Access Network.

The group is going to be sending information out by mail this month, with sign up starting on November 15th.

Here is an example of one the plans. If you pay $32 a month for Medicare, you have a $250 deductible. Medicare will pay for 75% after that. However, between $2,250 and $5,100, Medicare pays 0%. Officials say the reason is that most medications rarely go past $2,000. To help sort out the different options, Medicare officials will be holding enrolment drives throughout this process.
