New Program Aims To Help Seniors Get Through Winter

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

If the power goes out from a winter storm and there's no heat, it can be a dangerous situation for the elderly. Some have children or grand children they can call for help, but not everyone does. That's why the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging is kicking off a new Winter Pal program.

Seniors across the county can go to their local senior center and either sign up to be a winter pal or be assigned one. It's a network that's designed to keep the elderly safe when the weather turns brutal. For example, if a senior loses power in their home and they have no one else to call, they can contact their winter pal and stay with them until power is restored.

All nine senior centers in Cambria County are participating in the new program. Contact the one closest to your home for more information.
