New PSU Report: Paterno was fired for 'failure of leadership'

By WJAC Web Staff, Bill Wadell and The Associated Press

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --

The Penn State Board of Trustees is defending its decision to fire late coach Joe Paterno.

In a statement issued Monday, Penn State's trustees said Paterno's failure to follow up on a sexual abuse allegation against former assistant Jerry Sandusky "constituted a failure of leadership" that ultimately led to his firing in November.

The report was issued around 10 a.m. by the trustees and said the board ultimately decided to fire Paterno after learning the details of his testimony before a grand jury when charges were filed against Sandusky.

The report also said the board decided to fire Paterno by phone because his home was surrounded by media and they deemed there was no "dignified, private and secure way" for trustees to meet with him in person to deliver the message.

The statement echoes statements made by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett last week. The trustees also confirmed they are exploring options on how to honor Paterno's many contributions to Penn State.

Paterno died of lung cancer in January.
