New Skateboard Park Proposed

Blair County —

In many areas, skateboarders get a bum wrap for damaging sidewalks and handrails. Now, two teachers and a construction worker want to give Blair County skateboarders a hassle-free place of their own.

Wednesday night, the three organizers made a presentation to the Altoona City Council to get their support for a skateboard park. The site for the park is located on county property, by the Blair County Ballpark.

So, their next step is to meet with Blair County Commissioners to see if they can secure the land. The skateboard park is for the whole family and would include a pavilion, a playground, and a walking track, however, it is mainly a place for skateboarders to do their thing and stay out of trouble.

"This group of kids that were looking to reach have been a little bit pushed aside or neglected and we're looking to meet their needs," says organizer Timothy Boland.

Altoona City Council members say they support the project. They feel the biggest hurdle will be the three hundred thousand dollar price tag. Organizers say they will pay for the park through private funding and grants and having the city council on their side should help the group obtain grant money.
