New Technologies Found At Showcase For Commerce

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

The annual Showcase for Commerse kicked off Thursday in Johnstown.

Congressman John Murtha (D-Johnstown) was on hand to check out the latest technologies being created in Johnstown and used in our nation's defense.

One piece of equipment -- the snake robot -- has a camera attached to it. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon have been working on the project for nearly 20 years.

"It's still in its inception, but it'll get to the point where we can get it inside places to take pictures and take care of people," said Murtha.

Several other pieces of equipment at the showcase involve robotics. Murtha said new technology is being used to improve the military's body armor, which he thought was big and bulky on a recent trip to Afghanistan.

"We put it out as quickly as we can, and we're going by old standards," said Murtha. "But right here in Johnstown, we're going to develop lighter weight, more modified body armor, which all service will be able to use."
