New Traffic Patterns Run Smoothly At Altoona High School

What could have been a confusing first day of school for some in the Altoona School District went off without any bumps in the road.

Students faced new traffic patterns this year, due to the construction of a new junior high which took away all student parking at the high school for the next two years.

Students are now either being dropped off by parents or parking at the Jaffa Mosque a half-mile from the school, then shuttling in.

Wednesday morning, school officials said the arrival seemed to go smoothly. As of 7:45 a.m., traffic was light along 6th Avenue, and students were on time for class.

More than 200 parking spaces are available at the mosque, and many were taken.

Tom Bradley, AASD public relations person, said, "We know at least 40 students took the shuttle from Jaffa, which probably exceeded my estimation, and I think that number will only increase as students find out it's an easy thing to do."

Bradley said the only problem officials noticed was speeding in the school zone. He reminded drivers that the speed limit is 15 mph, and students have the right of way when walking in crosswalks.
