Norfolk Southern Unveils Experimental Electric Locomotive

It's being called the locomotive for the future generations.

Norfolk Southern officials unveiled the NS 999 Monday at the Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona.

It's a 1,500-horsepower switch locomotive prototype that relies on 1,080 12-volt rechargeable batteries for power.

The team at the shop also worked with the Department of Energy, the Federal Railroad Administration and Pennsylvania State University.

Congressman Bill Shuster, (R-9), secured $1.3 million in federal funding for the NS 999.

"You can continue to have good paying jobs but also have the kind of green transportation that Americans want for their environment but also deliver all over the country," U.S. Department of Transportation Ray LaHood said.

There's no word on how many jobs can be created by the NS 999.

Norfolk Southern officials tell WJACTV.com they're hoping to have the prototype on the tracks in the next few years.
