CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

Not showing for jury duty in Cambria County could soon cost you. Judges said it's becoming a common theme for people to just not show up when they're summoned, so they've come up with a plan.

"I think serving on a jury is a privilege. I think that it's a duty," said Cambria County President Judge Timothy Creany. "Along with serving in the military, I think it's one of the highest functions of citizenship."

But apparently not everyone agrees. Creany said only about 50 percent of the people summoned for jury duty showed on Thursday.

"We summon over 300 and expect somewhere about 200 people will show up, but yesterday about 150 showed up," he said.

He said it's not uncommon, but said it's becoming more and more frustrating. That's why he and the four other Cambria County judges have decided it's time to take action.

"At our judges meetings we discuss this and I don't know what to do," said Creany. "We agreed though, we had to something consistent."

It's still in the preliminary stages but Creany said they've already drafted a plan of enforcing a $100 fine to those who don't show.

"We decided those people who do not show up without an excuse are going to have to come in and have a hearing," said Creany. "We'll decide then, if they don't have an excuse, we intend to impose that fine."
