Obama administration wants feedback on plan to expand leave for troops' families

By WJAC Web Staff

WASHINGTON, D.C. --

A plan under consideration by the Obama administration would provide more job protection for family members of troops.

The plan, announced by first lady Michelle Obama on Monday, would allow family members of troops to take up to 12 weeks of leave from work to help a service member deployed on short notice.

The leave would be unpaid.

The plan would also allow family members to take up to 26 weeks of leave to help care for recent veterans injured in the line of duty.

Russ Hall, a father whose son lost his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan, said caregivers need more help.

"You get that call. Everything is different. I dropped everything I had. Lost my job, house, everything. Got to start back over," Hall said.

The Obama administration said it wants feedback before it makes the changes.  To submit feedback, click here.
