Obama, Romney to square off in domestic policy debate

By Bill Wadell

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. —

President Barack Obama and Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney will go head to head in a prime-time debate on the economy, healthc care and domestic energy issues, which will air live at 9 p.m. on WJAC-TV and will be streamed live on WJACTV.com.

Penn State law professor Sam Thompson discussed his book “The Obama versus Romney Debate on Economic Growth” and told 6News that candidates are expected to lay out “polar opposite plans.”

"There are two very different views. On the one hand, President Obama is pushing for stimulus. On the other hand, Gov. Romney is saying, 'We don't need stimulus,'” said Thompson.

Topics at the debate, being held in Denver, are expected to include economic policy, healthcare and domestic energy issues, as well as the American Jobs Act.

Thompson told 6News that he’s hopeful the candidates will drop the rhetoric and distractions and will offer clear explanations about their take on monetary policy.

"President Obama strongly supports what the Federal Reserve board is doing and trying to keep interest rates down so that they can spur investment, spur additional investment of home,” said Thompson. “Gov. Romney, on the other hand, said we shouldn’t be following or pursing what the fed is doing, quantitative easing, we shouldn't be pursuing these low interest rates."
