CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

One of the worst natural disasters in American history was being remembered Thursday in the Johnstown area.

On the same date 123 years ago, the South Fork Dam burst, allowing a 40-foot-high wall of water to roar down and through the Conemaugh Gap and slam into the city of Johnstown.

More than 2,000 people died in the great flood of 1889, and as many as 1,600 homes were destroyed.

Observances were held at the Flood Museum in Johnstown and the Flood National Memorial at St. Michael.
