Officials: residents in DuBois reminded to be alert after recent armed robberies

By Brittany Boyer

DUBOIS, Pa. —

Residents in DuBois are being reminded to be cautious and alert after two armed robberies and an attempted armed robbery last week.

Police said the first armed robbery occurred on Dec. 31 at the S&T Bank along West Scribner Ave.

Officials said the suspect, who is described as a white male between 5'5' and 5'7 showed a gun to a bank employee and demanded money. Police said the man was dressed in all black wearing a ski mask.

A few days later police said there was an attempted armed robbery at the same bank.

Officials said a man brandished a black handgun and demanded money. Police said the man fled the scene before receiving money.

The suspect is described as a white male between 5'5 and 5'7. Officials said he was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with light colored stripes down the side and a camo ski mask.

That same day police in Sandy Township were called to an armed robbery at the Cash for Gold store in Sandy Plaza.

Authorities said a white man wearing blue jeans and a dark colored jacket and ski mask brandished a gun and demanded money.

Herm Suplizio, the city manager in DuBois said that while DuBois is typically a safe and quiet city -- the last week shows that crime happens everywhere.

"We're obviously concerned and hopefully we can catch the person," Suplizio said.

Local leaders told 6 News that it's been a while since an armed robbery happened in DuBois. Recent events should show residents and business owners armed robberies can happen anywhere. For example, S&T Bank which was hit twice is right across the street from the City of DuBois police department.

"Just because it is across the street from the city building or the police station it shows that these armed robberies can take place anywhere at anytime," he said.

Suplizio encourages business who can afford a surveillance system to do so. In the long run it can help with providing more information. Suplizio reminds residents that times are changing and it's time for residents to become more aware of their surroundings.

"Keep your doors locked. Keep your cars locked. This day in age it's a shame that you have to do that. It's correct it is DuBois, but things like that still happen here," he said.
