Officials Stress Importance of PA Safe Haven Program

ST. MARYS, Pa. —

According to hospital officials in Elk County, there are options for parents overwhelmed by the task of taking care of a child.

Every hospital across Pennsylvania is considered a safe haven. Hospital officials in Elk County said that means parents overwhelmed or unprepared for raising a child can anonymously leave their babies who will then be cared for.

The Safe Haven program deals with infants up to 1 month old. Officials at Elk Regional Health Center said it's been in Pennsylvania for just a few years but it is rarely used. In fact, no infants have ever been dropped off at that hospital.

Officials said it's important to get the word out about the program in light of recent incidents.

Even though the Safe Haven program is limited to babies under 1 month old, officials stress older children will also be cared for.

The Pennsylvania Safe Haven law says if a baby is dropped off, a parent can change his or her mind but the parent will have to contact their county's Children and Youth Services agency.
