Officials Warn Drivers To Drive Sober During Holiday Weekend

Labor Day weekend is days away, and officers will be out trying to cut down on alcohol related crashes.

District attorneys, police, and PennDOT officials across the region met up Wednesday to discuss the approaching holiday weekend. Officials said Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends across the state.

More than 600 municipal police departments across the state will be conducting DUI checkpoints. Last year there were 169 alcohol-related crashes in Pennsylvania. Five of the accidents were fatal.

"There is no tolerance if you’re out there and you are drinking and get caught. You’re going to be subjected to the penalties set forth by the state of Pennsylvania. You’re not only putting yourself at risk but everyone else on the roads as well," said Charles Streightiff, of Huntingdon police.

Officials said it's OK to enjoy yourself Labor Day weekend, but if you decide to drink, have a designated driver.
