STATE COLLEGE —
UPDATE: 16:20:00, 11/11/11 -- Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary, a key witness in the child sex abuse scandal that has engulfed the school, has been placed on administrative leave.
--
Original Post -- A coach at the very center of the scandal that brought down Jerry Sandusky, Joe Paterno and Graham Spanier will not be on the sidelines Saturday when the Nittany Lions host Nebraska.
As 6 News reported Thursday night, university officials decided that wide receivers coach Mike McQueary will not be at Beaver Stadium.
School officials acknowledged he received multiple death threats.
McQueary was the grad assistant named in the grand jury presentment who testified he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a young boy and reported it to Paterno.
However, the rest of the Penn State coaching staff will be leading the Nittany Lions.
Interim head coach Tom Bradley said their mission is to keep the players focused despite all of the distractions, but some of the players are still upset about Paterno's dismissal and the way it was handled.
"The only word you could really describe it is the simplest of words and that's just sad. The way they handled it and just gave Coach Paterno a simple phone call and told him he was fired, which I think was just unprofessional. They could have at least brought him in. I mean a man who has dedicated six decades to this university and made it what it is today, I think deserves more. I think we're more upset with that than anything," said quarterback Matt McGloin.
That sentiment was also cited by many Penn State students in the wake of rioting Wednesday night that followed Paterno's dismissal.
State college and Penn State police have promised there will be a greater police presence for Saturday's game.
