One Of "Happy Valleys" Own Died Over Weekend

Ross Lehman, who wrote a popular column

for the Centre Daily Times for more than a quarter century and

helped popularize the region's "Happy Valley" nickname, has died.

He was 85 years old. Lehman, who also served as the director of the

Penn State Alumni Association from 1970 to 1983, died yesterday at

his home in College Heights. Many in the State College community

knew him best for the "Open House" column he and his wife, Katey,

wrote together from 1954 to 1980. In the column, they frequently

called the area "Happy Valley." The duo is credited with

popularizing the name.
