Opponents of Goucher St. project say it will hurt property, businesses

By Lindsay Ward and  WJAC Web Staff

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

Residents along a heavily traveled road in Johnstown are upset about a proposed plan that could affect their property and businesses.

People who live and work along Goucher Street are calling the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's project useless and a waste of time. Constituents said they think the $3 million needed to complete the project should be used elsewhere.

Westmont Drug Store on the street has been in Mike Gnagey's family for decades and he says he's upset about the project.

"My dad started this business 60 years ago. We're now working three generations at this store. We've been able to overcome retail chains, the grocery store, putting pharmacies in and the mail-order prescription programs. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think PennDOT would try to put us out of business," Gnagey said.

The project that is slated to go from Dundee Lane to Westgate and part of the plan includes cutting down around 62 trees.

In addition, he said PennDOT will eliminate a left-hand turn coming out of the entrance drive, at the Emmit and Pitt.

"They want to build fancy islands … eliminating parking spaces which are valuable for small businesses," Gnagey said.

Drivers on Goucher Street will notice yellow ribbons tied around trees and signs that read, "Save Our Streets." Many residents said they feel the project isn't necessary and there are other projects in Johnstown that could use the money more.

"A bridge down on Haynes Street. That could use $4 million," Gnagy said.

A meeting about the project will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Westmont Church of the Brethren. Local constituents are encouraged to attend and officials from PennDOT will be there.
