Out-Of-Control School Bus Crashes; One Injured

A school bus driver was injured in a crash after the transmission failed, police said.

No students were on the bus at the time.

The bus had just dropped students off at Ferndale Elementary School in Westmont when the crash happened. Police said the driver was getting ready to turn onto Millcreek Road when the transmission failed and the bus wouldn't stop.

Westhills Police said the driver was using a spare bus because his was being serviced. According to the bus company, the buses are serviced every week.

Police said the bus involved in the crash was an older model, but said there is no way to predict a transmission failure.

The driver told police he tried to slow the bus down by stomping on the brake. When that didn't work, he unbuckled his seat belt to reach for the emergency brake. At that time, police said the driver hit his head. The bus then struck a pole, which slowed it down enough to stop.

Westhills Police Officer Matthew Watts said the driver was looking for "a place to ditch the bus. As he turned, he hit a utility pole and the bus was actually on two wheels."

Police said the bus is currently being serviced and no citations will be issued.

School officials said they are "very thankful" there were no children on the bus at the time of the crash.
