Pa. court to hear candidate petition challenges, including Altmire case

By The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. --

The state Commonwealth Court is poised to open hearings on challenges to dozens of political candidates seeking to get their names on Pennsylvania's primary election ballot.

The first hearing is scheduled Tuesday on the nominating petition of Frank Pinto of Harrisburg, a candidate for the Republican nomination for state auditor general.

On Friday is a hearing for U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, who is being challenged by fellow Democratic Rep. Mark Critz.

Another challenge targets state Rep. Bill DeWeese, the former House Democratic leader convicted of five felony counts in a corruption trial earlier this month. DeWeese is running for election, pending a sentencing now scheduled for April 24 -- primary day -- that would force him to step down from his House seat.

The hearings could run through late March.
