Pa. governor may wait on decision on Medicaid expansion

By The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. —

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett may not announce a decision on whether he'll support the expansion of Medicaid when he delivers his budget address in less than 24 hours.

The Republican governor plans on Tuesday to send his budget proposal to the Legislature for the fiscal year beginning July 1. But Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi said Corbett had yet to reach a decision Monday on the Medicaid question.

Expanding Medicaid would provide government health insurance to hundreds of thousands of uninsured Pennsylvanians, with the federal government paying the bulk of the cost.

Corbett's said he worries says the state's costs could be unaffordable, even with the federal help. Democrats said expanding Medicaid will save money for state taxpayers and could help lower private insurance premiums.
