Pa. lawmaker preparing to introduce legislation to help make schools more safe

By Brittany Boyer

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. —

Pennsylvania Senator Joe Scarnati will be introducing legislation in Harrisburg in a few weeks.

The legislation will focus on school safety and adding more security at schools.

"I'm a father of a school-aged son. It troubles me that parents have to worry," Scarnati said.

After the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut on Dec. 14, schools nationwide are taking preventative measures to prevent school shootings from happening in their hometowns.

"These shootings take place in populated areas and rural areas. I have come to the conclusion that we need to step up and do something and make some plans," he said.

In the coming weeks Scarnati told 6 News he will be introducing legislation related to the "Safe Schools" line in the budget.

"The money would be used as a grant program for school districts, and really they can pick and choose what's suitable for them. I think these issues on safety really need to be made by school boards, superintendents, the teacher's at the school and how they want to enact better safety at their schools," he said.

Scarnati added that his proposal would generate $10 million. Currently, the "Safe School" line only generates $500,000 a year.

Scarnati said schools can use this money for things such as electronic monitoring or school resource officers.

"I don't think that we can wait. I think that this is more than a trend and we need to put a stop to it as soon as we can," he said.

Scarnati will introduce the legislation in Harrisburg on Feb. 13.
