Supreme Court decision upholds stay of execution for convicted murder

By Bill Wadell and The Associated Press

BELLEFONTE, Pa. —

A lawyer for a man on Pennsylvania's death row says her client remains "incredibly remorseful" that he carried out the 1993 slaying of a 16-year-old girl.

The remark comes after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a stay of execution Thursday for Hubert Lester Michael Jr., who was set be the first person executed in Pennsylvania since 1999.

Lawyer Helen Marino says the courts on Thursday saw that were "compelling claims relating to Mr. Michael's debilitating mental conditions that have never been reviewed by any court."

She says Michael "continues to be incredibly remorseful for his crime."

A spokeswoman for the Corrections Department says Michael's execution will be scheduled as soon as the stay is lifted.
