Parents charged in connection with toddler's drowning

By Kerri Corrado

INDIANA, Pa. —

“They are not horrible people, terribly naive, terribly young, and inexperienced and overwhelmed. And it ended tragically unfortunately,” neighbor Misti Sadler said.

Misti Sadler says she still can’t believe when her neighbors, Tonya and Wesley Thomas, found their 13-month son Ryden face down in a bathtub.

“And a few minutes later, I see the ambulance pull up and so I open the door and she was saying, do you know CPR, and she was screaming and crying,” Sadler said.

Police say Ryden was playing in the tub with two other siblings. The oldest was just five years old. Investigators said Tonya had been in the room, but left.

“We have been informed that they mother not only left the bathtub to take a text message from her mother, but then she went downstairs to the home to take care of some other matters,” Indiana County D.A. Patrick Dougherty said.

Investigators say this is not the first time the Thomas children were left unsupervised. State police say C-Y-S had investigated the couple on more than one occasion. Misti says she even called herself.

In a criminal complaint state police say, “These reports showed an obvious pattern of concern, with one of the major concerns being lack of parental supervision. The Indiana county D-A- calls it repeated neglect.”
