Parts of Somerset Co. in the dark as snow continues to fall

By Melanie Gillespie

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

Parts of Somerset County have been hit the hardest with snow.

Many were left to sit in the dark for several hours Monday night.

For people in Addison, it's not the first time the power went out from a snow storm.

The sound of a plow dragging from a truck is something we've grown used to hearing.

Roads in Addison, like much of the area, were blanketed with snow.

"Push it out of the way and move on. It's just part of winter and living in the area, and that's one of the reasons I like living here," Dr. David Welling said.

"Living in the mountains, you're used to it, really. You're born and raised here; we can handle it," Tyler Lytle said.

"Right now, if you don't have to be out, stay home," Addison Fire Chief Gary Compton said.

Power and heat was still pumping, but then… "You heard like noises of electrical things kicking on and off, and then just darkness everywhere," Lytle said.

6News was in Addison in October when snow from Superstorm Sandy left nearly the whole town in the dark.

The power went out again at about 7:02 Monday evening.

"I understand everything south of Somerset has lost power," Compton said.

A sight of darkness is all too familiar in the area of Addison Township.

"We hardly ever lose electricity, except in bad storms like this," Lytle said.

"If it does, it does. We'll just take it one hour, one day, one step at a time," Compton said.

The power outage in October lasted days, but the luck was restored in Addison when the power came back on not a few hours later.

"Be patient, be careful is what I want to tell the public and right now, if you don't have to be out, stay home," Compton said.

The fire department operated last outage despite not having power.

With the help of donations, the department ordered a propane generator and is in talks of becoming a Red Cross certified shelter in the near future.
