Patients Care If Johnstown Hospitals Consolidate

Johnstown —

For patients that go to U.P.M.C. now there's no problem. You get taken care of. But you could face an uncertain hassle with a possible consolidation. According to Scott Hartnett at U.P.M.C., emergency heart patients will be covered at any hospital. Patients with urgent or elective surgeries or catherizations will go to either Altoona Hospital or U.P.M.C. Hospital in Pittsburgh. Larry Caprous, who used to be with the Johnstown Business Council on Healthcare, says you'll probably have three options: switch your healthcare to a company that Conemaugh takes, go to another area hospital for care, or try and take good care of yourself so you won't need a hospital. Caprous tells Channel 6 News, "But Conemaugh's gonna wanna get more share of the market. They're, I'm sure, going to have more options available to the community or the various types of insurance programs that could replace U.P.M.C. insurance." No word yet on when, or if, a consolidation could happen. Conemaugh and U.P.M.C. are still in talks.
