PBS Coals lays off 138 workers

By WJAC Web Staff

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

PBS Coals has announced it will idle two mines and lay off 138 workers. The announcement comes just five months after the company laid of 225 employees.

The company says it will idle the Roytown and Hart mines, both in Somerset County.

According to a news release, company officials blame softening demand for coal and stricter regulations on the industry from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the layoffs.

"Escalating costs and uncertainty generated by recently advanced EPA regulations and interpretations have created a challenging business climate for the entire coal industry," said D. Lynn Shanks, company president and CEO.
