Penelec comes forward as owner of stolen copper after police release picture

By Melanie Gillespie

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

A victim identified was identified after state police sent 6News a picture of stolen copper wiring.

We aired that story Sunday.

Since then, a company came forward and claimed the stolen copper belonged to them.

6News first heard about the copper theft in a news release.

Police sent a picture which aired in our newscast.

On Monday, police received a call from Penelec who said that brand new copper was taken from one of its buildings.

The picture showed large strands of copper sitting in the bed of a pickup truck.

The owner of that copper came forward on Monday.

Penelec said one of its buildings was broken in to; copper wiring was cut, and hauled away.

On Friday morning, police pulled a truck over in Jenner Township for speeding.

The trooper said he noticed the copper covered up by a blanket in the bed of the truck, but the driver and his passenger said they did not where it came from.

Penelec crews saw it on our air.

Workers loaded the copper back into the bed of its rightful owners on Monday afternoon.

As for the men driving the truck, police said they will be charged sometime this week.

Police told 6News the two men inside did not own the truck, but a former family member did.

Police seized it, along with the copper worth about $4,000.
