Penn State DuBois Gets National Recognition

By Rich Wisniewski

DUBOIS, Pa —

Most colleges encourage their students to participate in activities outside of the classroom. Professors and advisors agree it helps a student learn, and maybe even find themselves.

Penn State DuBois is no different, but the one area the campus really prides itself on is community service. Over the years, thousands of students took time out of their lives to voluntarily give back.

"I love the feeling of someone appreciating the help," said Dylan Pearce, a student at Penn State DuBois.

Pearce is just one of many students who belong to the community service program at the college. For a lot of college students, college is about partying and trying to make money(when they can.) However, Pearce traded all that "typical college stuff" to make a difference.

"The first time somebody thanked me for something they didn't have to; it was a good sleep that night," Pearce said.

The students learned recently that their school was named on the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The national campaign highlights what role colleges and universities play for a community.

"I think it speaks volumes to the character and the quality of the students that we get here at Penn State DuBois," said Marly Doty, Assistant Director of Community Affairs at the college. She is often the one who sets up the community service projects and rallies the students to do them.

Some of the students recently returned from Washington D.C. where they spent their spring break helping out a homeless shelter.

They also spent some time cleaning up the east coast after Superstorm Sandy hit. In 2011, students from the college went to Joplin, Missouri to help after the tornado destroyed the town.

Not to mention the things they do here in DuBois.

"We work with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, lots of organizations, Make-A-Wish, we do a breakfast with Santa," said Doty, who added they also do several blood drives throughout the year.

Knowing their hardwork and dedication gets recognized on a national level, motivates students to continue their drive.
