PennDOT meets with residents directly affected by Goucher St. project

By WJAC Web Staff

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

After seeing the frustration and anger by some residents and businesses on the Goucher Street improvement project at a few of their larger meetings, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has recently decided to take a more personal approach.

On Wednesday, representatives from PennDOT met with residents who will be directly affected by the project. Afterward, PennDOT officials said they believe residents now have a more positive outlook on the project.

Alice Hammond, a senior project manager at PennDOT, said that out of the 30 people who attended the meeting, only two left with negative comments.

Of those comments and concerns, losing the beauty of the area had residents worried the most. Although PennDOT plans to remove dozens of trees, they said residents admitted that those trees can be a safety problem in their area, especially during stormy weather.

Overall, with the addition of sidewalks, crosswalks and the visual that PennDOT provide with their video of the before and after, PennDOT officials said residents seemed pleased.

"We received positive feedback at the meetings. Residents were able to speak with representatives one-on-one, and most of them acknowledged there are safety issues along the corridor of which the project will address," Hammond said.

PennDOT officials said they will probably have more meetings in the future on the project. They said for those who were unable to attend any of the past meetings, residents can still make plans to meet with them in the future.
