PennDOT Officials: Nuisance snow storms, wintry weather keeping workers busy

By Brittany Boyer

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. —

We might have dodged wintry weather last winter, but mother nature has returned this year.

So far many areas across our viewing area have surpassed average snowfall totals for this time of year.

Johnstown has seen 50 inches of snow, DuBois has seen 40 inches, 29 inches in State College and 37.5 inches in Altoona.

PennDOT officials said this winter is keeping its workers busy.

"Based on the forecast we're getting, contrary to what Punxsutawney Phil said, it looks like it is going to stick around around for another month or so. We're going to have these kinds of nuisance storms. Hopefully we don't have any big storms but if we do we will be ready," said Jim Surkovich, assistant engineer of maintenance.

Surkovich said within the nine counties of District 2, workers have been working around the clock taking care of the roads with more than 200 trucks.

Officials said employees have worked a number of 12 hour shifts keeping the roads clear for drivers.

This year there have been several major accidents along Interstate 80. Officials remind drivers to maintain a safe driving distance to prevent crashes.

"We always say if it's ice and snow you want to take it slow. You never know what the road may be ahead of you," said Dawn Roussey of PennDOT District 2.
