Penndot: Route 56 Construction Will Make Your Drive Safer

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. —

A $6.5 million road project will improve safety along a heavily traveled section of Route 56 in Bedford County, according to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials, and area residents say it's about time.

"Route 56 traffic over the last couple of years has gotten tremendous," said nearby resident Dave Bierley. "This is really needed."

Construction along Route 56 has been going on since March. The plan is to widen the road and add turning lanes into the Chestnut Ridge Schools and the Apple Bin Restaurant. It's a two year project that Penndot said will make a huge difference in your safety.

"You'll definitely see a difference," said construction manager Joe Casper. "The sight distance will be better on curves. It will be a real good improvement."

That has area businesses smiling. After several major accidents over the years, those who work at the Apple Bin Restaurant said they don't mind the construction delays when it comes to the future safety of their customers.

"People wanting to slow down and turn into the restaurant have had problems with the speeding trucks," said Apple Bin employee Michael Prime. "This will be a lot easier on everybody."

The project is expected to be done by fall of 2008. Until then, Penndot wants to remind drivers to be patient and careful while driving Route 56.
