Pennsylvania Politicians Denounce Pay Raise

In the cover of the night in early July, Pennsylvania legislators voted themselves hefty pay raises. Because of complaints, many of those same legislators are saying they have a change of heart.

"I thought they were very inappropriate. The timing was bad. The amount of the pay raise was very excessive," says Les Morganstern.

Les, like many, is still irritated by the raise. Between the house and senate, the average pay raise is 33 percent. As soon as the story broke, Pennsylvanians complained. In the beginning some politicians said they weren't going to take the raise. But now, with the heat still on, both Republicans and Democrats have denounced this raise.

"The representatives are now listening to their constituents and they are now perhaps taking back some of the words they have said," says Rick Herbster.

However, neither side has produced legislation to repeal the raise, even though both Republicans and Democrats have provided resolutions showing concern about it.

"I just hope it isn't just lip service and just doing it for political reasons," says Les.

On Monday, protestors will greet the legislators as they return to Harrisburg, hoping a bill to denounce the raise will be forth coming. If not, those we spoke with say they won't forget come Election Day. "Term limits in November," adds Rick.
