Philipsburg Merchants See Considerable Drop In Sales Since Fire

Centre County —

Business is anything but usual in downtown Philipsburg. Though the shops not hit by the fire are open, some business owners say purchases have slowed down considerably since the tragedy several weeks ago. About half of the business at Ricotta Jewelry store has dropped off, according to the owner. Many of the streets leading to downtown are still blocked off as workers continue to tear down buildings damaged by the fire. Business owners believe they are also seeing a decrease in sales because there are fewer stores attracting shoppers to the downtown area. Philipsburg officials hope to have the damaged buildings cleared away by next week in order that the downtown streets can be reopened and business can begin getting back to normal.
