Pipeline Project

Officials in Somerset County are touting their plan for a new water pipeline. It will carry water from the Quemhoning reservoir near Hollsopple all the way to the borough of Somerset. The fourteen million dollar project is well on its way thanks to a few federal grants. County commissioners and local officials say it will provide a big economic boost. Officials in Somerset County see more than water at the Quemahoning reservoir, they see opportunity. Once the twenty mile pipeline is complete, it will supply water to at least nine municipal water systems and they say that could attract new business. Conemaugh Township is one of four municipalities that have already committed to tapping into the water pipeline. It means an abundant source of water for an area that has struggled with droughts in the past. The reservoir is owned by the Cambria Somerset Authority. It will sell the water to the county, which will then sell the water to each township and borough that decides to tap in. The chairman of the CSA also sees it as win-win. Construction on the pipeline is still about two years away.
