Plan Underway To Fix Huntingdon County Mudslide Problem

Huntingdon County —

Jeff Wiker says he has seen so many accidents caused by mudslides on Route 26 near Jackson Corner in Huntingdon County that he has stopped counting.

"It seems like every time it rains, you hear traffic flying through that corner and there are a lot of accidents there," said Wiker, who owns property along the roadway. "It is a very unsafe corner."

Wiker and others concerned about the mudslide problem with came to a meeting to see what the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) plans to do about it.

"The plan basically is to excavate the hillside," said Brad Brumbaugh, PennDOT Senior Project Manager. "As I said the road will be closed during construction. Basically, the main problem with the slide is the water in the hillside causing kind of a slip, a slip-plane along the hillside. When we excavate out, we'll put in new rock material that will stabalize those slopes and serve as a drainage layer to get the water out."

Construction on the plan is expected to cost $3.4 million. Wiker and other residents say they think it will work.

"They will realign my driveway, which will make it so much nicer to pull out. Right now, when you pull out you don't see anything to the left, so it should make a great difference for us," Wiker said.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2009.
