Point Stadium Construction

Johnstown —

Channel 6 News talked with City Manager Jeff Silka Tuesday. He says construction on Point Stadium will start within a week. When it does the focus will be on demolition. Crews will tear down the Johns Street wall and work on the entrance, utilities, the curb and drainage. There will also be some traffic signal work done. For this phase, Silka says the city is about $100,000 over budget. The city has 2 million so far from the state and some money in city funds. The project's expected to cost 8 million dollars. The city is still hopeful it will get more money from Governor Ed Rendell. But Silka is adamant that the Point Stadium is a community asset.

Silka says, "A lot of people say tear it down. In essence that's what's happening. The Point Stadium next August is gonna be completely different. It's gonna be all new. A completely different look. It's going to be within the same architecture, but it's gonna be a new stadium.

The 1st phase of the project should be done in 2 months. The entire project should be finished in a year. Silka says they hope to market the stadium for not only sports but different events like concerts.
