Police arrest two in rash of Cambria Co. break-ins

By Maria Miller

ADAMS TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

6 News was there early Thursday morning as the first arrests were made in a string of break-ins throughout Cambria County.

6 News first reported last week about a rash of home break-ins in South Fork, Cambria County. Police said at least 10 homes were broken into and cash and valuables were removed.

Many people who live in the area have been on edge, scared to leave their homes and equally scared to stay inside. While police said many of the culprits are still at large, they do have a leg up on the investigation and it appears to be more widespread than they originally thought.

"We got on this and we treated it very seriously," said Adams Township Police Chief Kirk Moss. "We found that it was becoming an epidemic."

Police have now expanded their efforts saying the investigation has led them to other areas of Cambria County, which in turn is helping them tie up loose ends on unsolved cases.

"We've been following this up and as we all know, there's been an epidemic in the South Fork area of thefts being handled," said Moss. "We understand there's a multitude of offenses here with nighttime crimes within that area."

Early Thursday morning police made their first break in the case by arresting Lacy Altschuh and Lawrence Morrison. Police said the duo was involved in at least one burglary on Nov. 14.

"It was very well planned and detailed to the fact that the family had gone to church for approximately an hour and 10 minutes and within that (time) the house was invaded," said Moss. "The door was kicked in, there was jewelry removed, some cash and an extensive amount of jewelry."

Police said they tracked the duo down by a stolen ring. Police said Altschuh gave the ring to Morrison who was then caught on camera selling it to a jeweler in Richland Township. But police said Morrison also hit a home in Lower Yoder Townshipin October while the homeowner was inside sleeping.

The tips police have received lead them to believe their investigation is far from over.

"There's arrest warrants that came out of this and there's heroin that came out of this," said Moss. "There's a multitude of arrests going to come out of this information."

Police said Morrison will soon be facing more charges because early Thursday morning he apologized to a 6 News photographer for breaking into his house earlier this week.
