Police: Assault suspect was to stay away from victim's home

By Maria Miller

SUMMERHILL TOWNSHIP, Pa . —

It's a story 6 News has been following all week; a Cambria County man accused of striking two people with a baseball bat. On Wednesday one of the victims, Mike Pcola, passed away.

Now 6 News has uncovered new details. Police said Pcola's mother was actually the girlfriend of his attacker. Police said they arrested Gregory Conzo in May for assaulting her. They said he was to be sentenced for those charges this past Tuesday, one day after the brutal attack.

Conzo was arrested Monday evening and charged with attempted homicide after police said he struck Mike Pcola over the head with a baseball bat. According to police, Conzo had been in an argument with his biological daughter when Mike Pcola overheard and tried to step in. Police said Conzo swung the bat twice, the first time hitting his daughter in the arm, the second time striking Mike Pcola in the head.

Pcola died two days later.

"It's sad. Mike didn't deserve it," said a family friend who did not want to be identified. "Mike was a nice guy. He would have done anything to help anybody."

Police said Conzo should have never been at the home. When he was arrested for assault against Pcola's mother in May, police said a condition of his bond was to stay away from the home. But neighbors told 6 News that he never listened.

"He's always lived up there. He's constantly lived up there," said another unidentified neighbor. "Even recently he's lived up there. Always."

Police told 6 News they've responded to the Wilmore Heights home numerous times over the years for alleged assaults by Conzo, but they said his girlfriend would never press charges. Neighbors said she always took him back.

"She would just choose Greg all the time, like bring Greg back," said the neighbor. "Mike would leave. She would choose Greg over Mike."

"It's sad that it had to take this," said another neighbor. "He shouldn't have been up here. He should have been in jail a long time ago."

Police have not pressed anymore charges against Conzo. They told 6 News they're waiting for the coroner to conduct an autopsy which is scheduled for Friday.
