CLEARFIELD,Pa —
Saint Patrick's Day has become one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world.
However, it can also be a very big party day.
Which means, law enforcement stays busy.
As a result of the hustle and bustle St. Patty's Day brings, police are upping their staff. It's not just Clearfield or Jefferson County, but several counties in Pennsylvania will have more officers working this weekend. The additional officers will have one job and one job only: watch for drunk drivers.
"We plan on adding extra officers throughout the county at key times and key locations to help keep everybody safe," said Officer Daniel Farley, with the Clearfield Borough Police Department.
Officer Farley heads the DUI Task Force for Clearfield and is just one of many departments who will have more cops working this holiday weekend.
"Everybody's going to go out, we know that, but just be responsible," he said, while reminding people to get a designated driver.
Cambria County is adding an additional eight patrol cars this weekend. Officals in Centre County say, that's about what they will have working, and Officer Farley adds that his county will be right up there.
"Generally on a holiday weekend like this, there's going to be key times throughout the weekend when we're going to have upwards of four times the amount of officers then there normally is during regular weekends," he said.
The overtime that the officers receive this weekend will not come at the tax payers expense. In fact, the overtime comes from money provided by the federal government, which gets distributed to the state, and filtered down to local government, which then gets distributed to law enforcement for holidays where drinking is likely to occur.
The overall goal is to catch drunk drivers, and hopefully save lives.
