Police discourage back-alley detour around West College Avenue construction

By Bill Wadell

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. —

State College Borough Water Authority officials told 6News that repairs to aging water and sewer lines beneath a stretch of West College Avenue likely won’t wrap up until mid-August.

Jerry Harlow, a manager at The Bicycle Shop, said business hasn’t been impacted because crews were able to keep side streets open during the construction.

"If they wouldn't have done that, it would've been killer. They didn't know what they were getting into when they started digging it,” said Harlow. “It's everywhere in State College this summer. It seems like whichever street you turn down, the road is closed. They're working here, working there."

State College Police Chief Tom King is urging drivers to followed the marked detour around the project by using Atherton Street, Westerly Parkway and Blue Course Drive, rather than trying to find their own detour through residential areas.

“Have patience. Give yourself a little bit of extra time; we discourage anyone from cutting through the neighborhoods in order to avoid the road closures,” said King. “Use the main arteries. Be careful, it's summertime. We have a lot of children out on bikes and people playing ball."
