Police looking for more help to patrol town on Groundhog Day

By Brittany Boyer

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. —

Police in Punxsutawney are preparing for what is expected to be a busier than normal Groundhog Day.

This year Groundhog Day falls on a Saturday.

Organizers told 6 News they expect to see up to 20,000 people depending on the weather.

Chief Tom Fedigan of the Punxsutawney Borough police department said there will be about 90 buses taking people to and from Gobbler's Knob.

As the day approaches Fedigan said the department is trying to round up more law enforcement agencies to help out with the crowd.

Fedigan told 6 News they were told that this year they would not be receiving as much help from the state police as they did in previous years due to budget issues.

Jamie Levier, a state police public information officer told 6 News that they will be providing the same amount of coverage.

"We're looking at filling approximately 30 positions in town to include traffic control, crowd control, roving patrols, a little bit of everything," Fedigan said.

Fedigan said every year more than 100 law enforcement officials help out with Groundhog Day.

He said this year is more difficult due to sacrifices departments are facing.

"It's across the board it's not just the state [police] it's Punxsutawney. It's every department I've been in contact with, we're all in the same boat as far as manpower, being shorthanded and financial issues," he said.

Fedigan added that those attending Groundhog Day should not assume there will not be high police coverage.

Despite some changes that will be made -- they will be ready come Feb. 2.

"I don't feel because of that there's going to be any additional safety concerns. We're preparing for the worst. We're preparing for a very big crowd, it falls on a weekend. But, we're preparing for the best," Fedigan said.
