Police: Man Kidnapped Blair Co. Girl

TYRONE, Pa. —

Tyrone police said 57-year-old Dennis Stehley kidnapped the girl from a house along Jefferson Avenue.

Police said he then drove her to Kettle Road, near the reservoir and disappeared into the woods. That's when a state police chopper, a volunteer K-9 unit and other Blair County law enforcement agencies sprang into action.

"We were quickly dispatched to the wooded area,” said Sgt. David Reese with the Pennsylvania State Police. “As they were directed by the aviation unit, they caught the suspect. The alarm was sounded for a missing child, and everyone stepped up."

State police found the little girl a short time later, when she yelled for help. They said the girl was taken to Pittsburgh for testing.

"It could've been a different outcome. I believe the quick response was key in this. Any longer, I don't see how the outcome would be--… I don't think it would be as favorable as it's been,” Reese said.

Troopers credit the dozens of first responders and volunteers that searched for the girl.

"Time is of the essence in a situation like this. It's very nice to know that when the call comes out, the community comes. We can't do the job without them."

Court documents show Steheley has a criminal history. A criminal docket from 1999 shows he pleaded guilty to indecent assault and aggravated assault. He was also charged for rape, but that charge was later withdrawn.

Stehley is in prison on a $1million bond.
