Police Officer Patrols Johnstown High School Halls

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

The Johnstown Police Department once again has an officer in the high school keeping tabs on students and stopping fights before they start. This is in a response to a recent fight that ended with teachers getting hurt.

Officer Mark Westrick patrolled the halls two years ago and said he is thrilled to be back at the school. The grant that originally paid for a school officer was allowed to expire and it was only reinstated after a fight in January where teachers were injured and gang colors were shown.

Westrick said with all the stories he had heard about the school, he admitted he was nervous to come back. However, he said he is pleasantly surprised.

"I was a little skeptical myself until I came here," said Westrick. "They are a great group of kids and the problems that I thought I would see here are really none existent."

Westrick said he tries to be approachable and friendly to the students and so far he said it's working. According to Westrick, a lot of the kids confide in him and he is able to stop problems now before they escalate.
