Police Remind People To Be Careful While Walking, Bicycling Along Roadways

With the weather breaking and more people doing outdoor activities, police are reminding people to be careful after two accidents -- one of which was fatal.

Tuesday, 61-year-old Samuel Luke was walking along Route 764 in Altoona near the Belmeed Building when he was struck by a car. He died at the scene.

Wednesday morning a bicyclist suffered minor injuries when he was struck by a car while riding in Cambria County. Police said the bicyclist was coming up Frankstown Road when a driver's vision was hindered by the sun and the vehicle struck the cyclist.

Police said bikers, walkers and runners should use sidewalks where available, and bicyclists should always wear a helmet.

"If you're walking, walk towards traffic. But if you are on a bike, stay in the same lane as the traffic flow," said Conemaugh Township Police Chief Daniel Freiwald.

Drivers should also be prepared for more pedestrians on the roads.

"Be careful and drive the speed limit," Freiwald said.

An accident reconstruction team was at the scene where Luke died on Tuesday, but officials said it could take weeks to determine who was at fault.
