Police Say Nude Photos Found On Students' Cell Phones

PHILIPSBURG, Pa. —

Five Centre County students are under investigation for a recent text messaging incident involving nude pictures of one of the students.

District Attorney Michael Madeira said this is the third or fourth case of nude texting involving students in Centre County that his office is aware of.

Apparently a female student at Philipsburg-Osceola Junior High School took pictures of herself, text messaged them to a male student who then sent them to other eighth grade students.

Principal Bob Rocco said the female student was visibly upset Tuesday morning and that is when he got involved.

It did not happen on school grounds, but Rocco alerted Pennsylvania State Police who then confiscated all of the students' phones.

Rocco said, "The students involved were all good kids. They're not kids who were in trouble. They're kids who were all shocked at the fact that what they were doing was illegal."

The case is headed to Madeira's office.

"It's potentially against the law. It's potentially a criminal record and I want kids and parents in particular to know about it. At some point we'll take a stronger law enforcement approach after the proactive one," said Madeira.

Because this is new territory for a lot of school districts, not just Centre County, Madeira said he wants the opportunity to give a verbal warning to students and parents about the dangers of this type of text messaging before he starts pressing charges.
