Police Say They Shot Man After He Pointed Gun At Them

Officials said police officers tried to negotiate with a man during a standoff Tuesday night, but he pointed a gun at them so they shot and killed him.

Chester Guyton, 67, died as a result of the shooting on Yellow Creek Drive in Hopewell Township, Bedford County.

At a press conference Wednesday, the Bedford County District Attorney and two Pennsylvania State Police officers said the incident started around 10:25 a.m. Tuesday when police responded to a call about a distraught man.

Witnesses said Guyton was wandering around his neighborhood with a loaded gun, threatening to kill himself and shoot others. Police also said Guyton had at least one other gun. They said they tried to negotiate with him, but around 1:15 p.m. he pointed his gun at officers and a sharpshooter shot Guyton in the chest, killing him.

The district attorney said it's too early in the investigation to tell for sure but it appears to be a justified shooting.

Video of the incident was recorded on a police cruiser camera. The district attorney said he watched the video and it confirms that Guyton deliberately pointed his gun at police, upholding the use of deadly force.

Police did not release the name of the officer who shot Guyton. Stay with WJACTV.com and WJAC-TV News for continuing coverage.
