Police seek man who assaulted, tried to rob UPJ student on campus

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

Police are searching for a man who assaulted and tried to rob a University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown student on campus.

The incident happened Tuesday night, in a parking lot across from Whalley Chapel.

The assailant approached the student and demanded his wallet. The student refused and fought back, then the assailant struck the student with what appeared to be a knife or a letter opener.

The student was not seriously wounded.

The assailant is described as a man who is missing his front teeth, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing all black clothes and wearing orange tennis shoes.

According to an alert on the university's website, people are advised to use caution, and campus police will have additional patrols on campus. People are advised to not travel alone, and campus police will provide an escort so students don't have to walk alone.

After the attack, according to the alert, the perpetrator is believed to have fled by foot in the direction of the Campus Commons apartments.

Campus police said if a person notices someone who matches the assailant's description, they should not attempt to confront or detain him. Anyone with information is asked to call campus police at 814-269-7005.
