Police: sex offender and teen thought out runaway plan

By Brittany Boyer

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. —

Wednesday afternoon registered sex offender, Donald Guthrie was arrested in Ogle County, Illinois.

Police had been looking for Guthrie for several days after reports that 14-year-old Karley Bletz of Punxsutawney ran away with him.

For more than one week family members of Bletz had no idea where the teen ran off to.  However, they knew that she ran off with this man.

Police in Mount Morris told 6 News that they spotted Guthrie around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Mount Morris police chief said that while on patrol, he noticed a man in a hooded sweatshirt and pants.

Police said he looked unfamiliar and it was 90 degrees outside, so something was suspicious.

Authorities engaged in conversation with the individual, and said that he did not make much eye contact.

Police said that the man provided a name, but they were later able to determine that the name was false and he was Donald Guthrie.

Officials said that the man was standing outside of a bank.

Police believe Guthrie was planning to rob the bank.

Police told 6 News that when they asked Guthrie if he was going to rob the bank he responded saying, "I wasn't going to hurt anyone."

Authorities were able to arrest Guthrie around 3 p.m. after determining they had the right person.

Officers told 6 News that Guthrie told them that Bletz was in the car.

Police said Guthrie's once silver car was painted dark green.  Bletz, who was blonde before her disappearance, now had dark hair.

The teen also told police that they planned on removing her braces.

Police said that Guthrie removed his Pennsylvania license plate and replaced it with one from Indiana.

The teen told police that they had been staying in multiple hotels over the past week.

On Thursday, police said Guthrie went to court in Ogle County.

No charges in Illinois were filed against Guthrie.

Police said he waived his right to extradition and will return to Lycoming County.

As of now no charges have been filed against Guthrie in Jefferson County.

According to court documents charges are pending against Guthrie.

These charges are related to a bank robbery in Hughesville on Aug. 27.

Bletz is expected to return to Jefferson County on Thursday or Friday.
